If you want to hook into a fish that will give you the fight of a lifetime, the swordfish is the one for you. They are also fabulous table fare. Two common methods target these spectacular game fish: the traditional drift fishing at night, or daytime dropping. Both offer great opportunities, each in its own way.

Nighttime fishing lets you fish several rods at once, so you can hook up with more than one fish. It is not uncommon to be doing battle with several fish at the same time. The most commonly used baits are squid, along with a variety of live baits ranging from blue runners to small dolphins.
The baits are spread out using floats and suspended below them at different depths. Typically, each bait has a light attached to help attract the swords. Getting up to ten bites over the course of a night is not uncommon. Sharks are also great to catch on nighttime swordfish trips.

Daytime swordfish fishing has become the hot ticket in its own right, and it is easy to see why. Seeing one of these spectacular sea creatures all lit up in daylight is a thrill, and a hooked sword jumping near the surface is quite a sight. The big advantage of daytime fishing is you don’t wait long for a bite, and the average fish runs larger.
You also have a chance to catch tuna and dolphin while traveling to and from the swordfish grounds. The trade-offs are that you fish one rod at a time, and you are typically fishing in waters 1,200–2,000 ft deep. It takes a while to reel these monsters up from those depths, but it is well worth it.
Swordfish can be caught year-round in South Florida, with the best months in the early fall. Get out and try your luck with these great fighting billfish.
